Dorothy (Hester) Kyllo, age 95 of Dutton, passed away on April 26, 2024. She was born December 24, 1928 in Glasgow, Illinois to Archie and Iva May (Young) Hester. She married Donald E. Kyllo on August 7, 1952 at Glasgow Baptist Church.
She was a proud 1950 graduate of the Our Savior’s Hospital nursing program in Jacksonville, Illinois. Dorothy first practiced nursing in Illinois and then in Ames, Iowa for nearly 50 years devoting much of her nursing career to senior care. She started one of the first Alzheimer’s family support groups in the Midwest in the 1970s. She was named an Unsung Hero by the Ames Daily Tribune for her work in the Bethesda Lutheran Church clothing room.
She moved to Dutton in 2003 and became an active member of Randall’s Chapel. Dorothy was an avid quilter, reader, and gardener who enjoyed cooking and caring for those less fortunate.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers (Dean, David and C.E. [Corky]) and two sisters, (Charlene Boyd and infant, Ellen), and a granddaughter, Karen Maloney. She is survived by two sons, John Kyllo (Dottie) of Cherokee Village, AR and David Kyllo of Arlington, VA, a sister, Roberta Ryder of Glasgow; three grandchildren, Joshua Kyllo (Melissa) of Fayetteville, TN, Sarah Walldorf (Karl) of Libertyville, IL, and Stephanie Smart (John) of Henagar, AL, and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at Randall’s Chapel on Saturday, May 4, 2024 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Randall’s Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Randall’s Chapel in Scottsboro or Alabama Public Television.
The family would like to thank the staff at Highlands Health and Rehab in Scottsboro for more than two years of loving care that brought her joy and comfort.
