Carl passed away peacefully on November 10, 2023. He was born in Mobile Alabama on June 17, 1927, to Carl Henry Spanyer and Mabel Carr Spanyer. He was the oldest of three children with two younger brothers, Robert Spanyer and James Spanyer. He graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile and from Alabama Polytechnical Institute (now Auburn University) with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was employed by Bell South for 34 years and retired as Engineering Manager in Decatur in 1983. He traveled for many years with his Sweetheart, Tula, in their Avion travel trailer seeing all of the wonders of the United States. He was proud to say he had been to all of the states in the United States. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur, a Registered Professional Engineer, was a member of the Wheeler Lake Yacht Club and a licensed river pilot. He loved saying he was licensed to fly a plane before he got his driver’s license.
Carl is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Tula Williams Spanyer and two children James Carl Spanyer and Carla Jo Spanyer Winborne. Survivors are his children David Spanyer (Sonya) of Ragland, Karen L. Spanyer of Huntsville and Rebecca Spanyer Crabtree of Harvest and son-in-law Ellis Winborne of Grady Alabama. Carl was particularly proud of his five grandchildren, Shelby A. Spanyer, Sydney O. Spanyer, Christy W. Romano (Blake), Robin W. Douglass (Joshua, Sr.), Frazier Crabtree, Jr. (Lexi), and his six great grandchildren.
