Nancy Nell Rush Spillers Obituary (1930-2023)
Aka Nancy, Mama, Mom, Nana, Miss Nancy, Mommy January 1, 1930 – October 14, 2023, Huntsville, Alabama. Nancy died peacefully on October 14, 2023, at the age of 93.
Nancy was born in Chester, SC to Isabel Frances Rush and William Getter Rush. She was the second of their three children. Her older sister, Carol Hope Rush Gossett and her younger brother William Getter Rush, Jr (Billy) preceded her in death. Nancy’s husband Randolph “Randy” Spillers and her oldest son, Danny also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, David Spillers (Cindy) and her two “grand dogs”; Buddy and Copper.
Nancy lived in York, SC and worked in the Probate Judge’s office in York County for many years. After her retirement, she moved to Rock Hill, SC and adopted a young family as Nana. She was active in the neighborhood community, and she adored time spent with her adopted family, the Garcias. In 2008 David convinced his Mom to move to Huntsville, AL to help him “flip” a house. She agreed and enjoyed renovating, updating and decorating that home which became her own. Nancy had a gift for interior decorating and appreciated quality furniture and fabrics. She loved flowers, shrubs and landscape design. She had a vast knowledge of plants and collected many books on the subject. Speaking of books, Nancy was an avid reader,
using the south Huntsville library, she would typically read 2-3 books every two weeks.
Nancy shared that her perfect home would be a crystal house in a fern forest where she would eat chocolate all day. She was a huge NFL fan and wouldn’t answer the phone during a game, especially if her favorite players, Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rogers were playing. Nancy connected with people from all walks of life and a variety of backgrounds. She could easily carry on a conversation with anyone, and she touched the lives of many people.
Nancy had a way of getting things done. She once met a gentleman at Publix and invited him to come and help her work in the yard. This man was from Vietnam and spoke little English. She spoke no Vietnamese, so they used sign language with smiles and laughter to accomplish the task. Nancy became a friend of the family and was especially close to his daughter, Rosie. Nancy was always current with world events, sharing news stories as soon as they were released. She followed the stock market daily.
There will be a visitation in Huntsville for family and close friends at a date to be announced. There will also be a graveside service in York, SC at a future date.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
