Lois VanWingerdenLois VanWingerden of Fort Payne, passed away Monday, October 2, 2023. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 22, 1928 to the late Cornelius VanWingerden and Catherine VanJaarsveld VanWingerden. At the age of one, her mother passed away and Angie Holst married her father and loved and reared Lois as her own daughter. Ms. VanWingerden retired as a teacher from Cobb County Board of Education, but her love of students and gift of teaching continued throughout her life. Her kind and gentle spirit was an encouragement and positive impact on all who were fortunate to know and love her. She was a member of Second Baptist Church and attended Howard’s Chapel where she often shared her love of music by singing.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Will Ramage and Rev. Clifton Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Howards Chapel or Second Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sister Mary Jo Siegel and husband Jerry; many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly; special cousin Fannie Mae Keegstra; chosen family and special neighbors Patricia and Randy Flory; and her beloved caregivers.

She was preceded in death by her lifetime companion Barbara Keith and brothers Donald and Klaire VanWingerden, as well as her parents.

Wilson Funeral Home and Crematory of Fort Payne is in charge of arrangements.
