Harold Whitman Maples

Harold Whitman Maples, 94, Sheffield, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023. Visitation will be Thursday, October 5, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at First Methodist Church, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will immediately follow at the church with Dr. Rudy Guess officiating. Son, Dr. Jim Maples, and grandson, Joe Deegan, will conduct the eulogy. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Tuscumbia.

Harold was a member of First Methodist Church, Tuscumbia, where he sang in the choir for over fifty years. He was a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean War, and a member of the Tuscumbia Kiwanis. Harold worked as a postal clerk for the Tuscumbia Post Office. His charismatic personality and friendly spirit drew people from the entire Shoals area to come and visit with him there. Harold was preceded in death by his wife of seventy years, Sarah Anne Tanner Maples.

He is survived by his children, Whit Maples (Carla), Anne Deegan (Bill), and Jim Maples (Mashea); grandchildren, Joe Deegan (Leah), Sarah Cooper (Beau), Catie Ivester (Adam), Jessica Flanagan (Nick), Lauren Herring (Casey), Whitney Bumgardner (Parker), and Tanner Maples (Caitlin); and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tanner Maples, Joe Deegan, Nick Flanagan, Casey Herring, Adam Ivester, and Beau Cooper.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Methodist Church, Tuscumbia, 104 East 3rd Street, Tuscumbia, AL 35674.
