Growing up, he enjoyed playing baseball at the Fifth Avenue baseball fields, but his favorite pastime was playing guitar and singing. He, his dad, and his uncles played music together often. He was in a band called “Dexter and the Derbys”, who had the honor of playing for the inauguration of Governor George Wallace. He attended Calhoun Community College.

Larry spent the vast majority of his working life in various retail settings and roles, beginning in his teens at Vick’s in the L&S shopping center and finishing in the jewelry business at Cluxton’s Jewelry, then Jimmy Smith Jeweler’s in Decatur.

Larry and Amelia met on a blind date when he was 18 and they married two years later in 1971. They welcomed a daughter, Laurie, in 1973. The family of three moved to several locations as Larry progressed in his retail positions before moving back to Athens in the 1980s.

Larry, Amelia, and Laurie attended Jackson Drive church of Christ, where Larry was currently a member.
