Donald Monroe Hammond, 73, of Ypsilanti, MI, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023. A graveside service for Don will be held at Roselawn Cemetery on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 10:30 AM. Don was born to Devard Hammond, Sr. and Marie (Manzella) Hammond on February 22, 1950. He grew up in Bessemer, Alabama and attended Bessemer High School. He earned BS and MS degrees in Engineering at Auburn University before a career with the US Army Department of Defense for which he was awarded the Order of St. Barbara medal and from which he retired early in 2004. Don shared his life with his wife Betty (Chatham) Hammond for 36 years in Huntsville and Decatur until her death in 2013. They had one child, Catherine and, with her wife Mary, two grandchildren. In retirement, Don enjoyed living out in the country, fishing, and woodworking. He loved making folks laugh and was always ready with a clever joke or witty comment. Don was much lovedand his moves on the dance floor were the envy of many! Don is survived by his brother Devard Hammond, Jr., daughter Catherine Mullalond, daughter-in-law Mary, grandchildren Hollis and Larkin, and longtime sweetheart, Margie Brooke.
