ATHENS-TVA and state emergency management officials host the annual media nuclear emergency preparation education event at the Browns Ferry Plant on Tuesday, December 6.  the media was taken to the  plant’s training center so could be informed as to   where to go and what to do in case of a nuclear emergency at the plant. TVA  also provided plant updates and addressed any questions about nuclear energy/emergencies. Alabama Emergency Management was also on hand to assist with the presentation. Nuclear calendars will be going out soon and be in mail boxes before Christmas. Folks within 10 miles of the plant should be looking for them.

The event was held at the Browns Ferry Training Center, 10835 Shaw Road, Athens Alabama 35611.  The media spent a couple of hours learning what to do in the unlikely event of a nuclear emergency at the plant and where to go to get accurate and timely information.

According to Browns Ferry Senior Vice President Manu Sivaraman:

Manu Sivaraman, Browns Ferry Senior Vice President

Media play a critical role in assisting TVA and ADMA in rapidly communicating timely, accurate information during any emergency situation. A Joint Information Center will be established in Decatur, Alabama in the event of a more serious event to ensure both TVA and ADAM personnel are available to provide routine updates and answer any questions.

TVA has installed and maintains a siren-based public notification system within a 10-mile radius of the plant. The siren system is tested monthly and is only one of a multi-layer approach to public notification and information.

Each year, TVA sends a nuclear emergency preparedness calendar to each household within a 10-mile radius of the plant. The calendar contains the latest information about nuclear emergency preparedness, the actions each family should be prepared to take and specific evacuation routes, if needed. The calendars are also available electronically at www.tva.com/prepare
