John Robert Key
April 14, 1935 – October 15, 2022
Mr. Key was born in Dothan, Alabama and one of five children born to Clarence Robert Key (Jack), and Mami Lou Key. He graduated from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, and later earned a master’s degree at the University of Michigan.
Following his parents’ footsteps, John, along with his first wife, Eleanor, joined the Salvation Army as their path for pursuing the ministry. The majority of his career Mr. Key worked as both minister and teacher. In all of his pursuits, he endeavored to share the Gospel and hope offered in Salvation through Jesus Christ.
After leaving the Salvation Army in the mid 70’s, he moved his family to Alabama to be near relatives and enjoy the milder climate. Even after leaving his leadership role in the Army, he continued as a Soldier and often visited the homeless, local jails, and the destitute. He pursued
these endeavors until physical and mental incapacities no longer allowed him to do so.
Mr. Key is survived by his wife; Sharon Key, his five children born of Eleanor Key; Deborah Devore, Benjamin Key (Augustina), Stephen Key, Angela O’Rourke (John), John David Key and his sister, Clarice Waymire. He is also survived by six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Mr. Key’s name be made to the Salvation Army.
