Neil Austin Miller - Germantown, TN Neil Austin Miller, Ph.D., age 90, retired Professor Emeritus from The University of Memphis, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at his home. Born on April 9, 1932 in Grand Rapids, MI to the late Marjorie and Kennith C. Miller, he was in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Sciences for thirty-two years. Dr. Miller taught graduate and undergraduate courses in general ecology, forest ecology, field techniques, advanced plant ecology as well as introductory biology courses for non-science majors. His grants and field work focused on wildlife enhancement programs, wetland mitigation projects and hydrologic factors impacting the Mississippi River Watershed. Nationally recognized for his work in wetland preservation and conservation, he served as a consultant to the Republic of Estonia, the Tennessee Obion Forked Deer River Basin Authority, the Tennessee Department of Transportation and engineering firms. Environmental projects throughout the nation bear his name and many private agencies sought his expertise prior to construction projects. Dr. Miller was a recognized developer of wildlife areas adjoining metropolitan landfills.

 

A graduate of Michigan State University and Southern Illinois University, he began his teaching career in Grand Rapids, MI where he taught science courses to students in grades 7-12. His teaching career progressed through Treadwell High School, Memphis State, and Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. Not only was he an exceptional teacher and leader but was known for the immense laughter and joy he brought into his classrooms. He was an Eagle Scout, served in the United States Coast Guard, and was a graduate forester.

 

The recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, Dr. Miller was foremost a teacher. The University of Memphis Distinguished Teaching Award, the Kentwood School District Outstanding Teacher Award, a National Faculty Scholar and a recipient of the National Arbor Day Award are among his distinctions. His association with The National Faculty, a non-profit provider of professional development for teachers, directed his skills throughout the Delta region with educators. He served a Region VI and Memphis Unit President of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.

 

Dr. Miller is survived by his wife. Sally; daughters, Anne M. Thomas (Terrence) of Germantown, TN and the late Leigh M. Stilwell (Jay) of San Francisco, CA; granddaughter Sarah Bond Coker Stilwell of San Francisco, CA; grandson, Franklin James Allen, IV of Lewisville, TX; and granddaughter Mabry Grace Thomas of Germantown, TN. Burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery in Humboldt, TN following a small graveside service.
