Jacob Harwell Herring Jr, age 94 of Winchester, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born November 30, 1927 in Fairfield, AL to the late Jacob and Ellie Morton Herring. Jacob was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a submariner on the submarine “Catfish” during World War II. After his service in the Navy, he went to work at Birmingham Southern Railroad, where his team worked on converting locomotives from steam power to diesel power. He would later go to work with Western Union installing power lines. In the early 1950s, he and his family moved to Estill Springs, where he went to work at the Wind Tunnel Facility at Arnold Engineering and Development Center, where he retired as a supervisor in the Engine Test Facility. Also during this time, he was a volunteer Fireman for the Estill Springs Fire Department. While continuing to work at the base, he also opened Tim’s Ford Marine, where he sold boats and did repairs. Jacob was also a member of the Eastern Star and a Mason. He and his wife very involved in the Franklin County community. He helped build the scout house for Scout Troop 391 of Estill Springs. Jacob also helped build the baseball field and put in lighting at the Estill Springs City Park. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed spending time on the lake fishing, skiing, and boating. He also enjoyed watching Nascar and Auburn Football. Jacob will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and brother. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Jacob Harwell Herring III; and sister, Mary Emily Herring Safford. He is survived by his children, Deborah Joy Herring Olney, Leslie Elaine Herring, and Grady Lee (Diane) Herring; special sister, Nancy Houchins; special caregiver, Debra Majors; grandchildren, Christopher Douglas (Stephanie) Brown and Ellie Christina Herring; great-grandchildren, Kayla Brown and Kelsey Woods; sister, Patricia Joy Herring (George) Bonkemeyer; and several nieces and nephews. Per Jacob’s request, his body will be donated to the University of Tennessee Body Farm and a private service will be held with the family. The family request that donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc., 207 N. Jackson St. Tullahoma, TN 37388.
