Mavis Brewer Summerall, 91, of Eupora, Miss., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at North Miss. Medical Center in Eupora. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cumberland Baptist Church in Cumberland with the Rev. Kermit Summerall III officiating. Burial will be at Clarkson Cemetery in Webster County. She was a member of Cumberland Baptist Church. Mrs. Summerall was born, raised and married in Webster County. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Franklin and Annie Brewer; brothers, Louis, Robert Lee and Willie; sisters, Ivy Lou and Eileen.
She graduated from Cumberland High School and attended Wood Junior College in Mathiston. She married Kermit Summerall, now deceased, of Maben. Her youngest daughter, Frankie Ann Crittenden, was killed in 1987.
She worked as a hairdresser with Helan Barton-Cash in Eupora, on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and was retired from the U.S. Army Civil Service in Huntsville, Ala. where she resided for 39 years. While working with the U.S. Army as a secretary, she was privileged to work on the Apollo and Saturn space program. She witnessed the Apollo X lift off.
Survivors include her daughter, Myrna Crittenden, of Eupora, Miss.; a son, Kermit Summerall Jr., of Huntsville, Ala.; sister, Louise Oliver, of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Will (Melinda) Crittenden, of Yuma, Ariz., Gaylon (Kristen) Crittenden, of Zebulon, N.C., Charlene Rutherford, of Eupora, Miss., the Rev. Kermit (Nicole) Summerall III, of Columbia, Mo., Melonie Irons, of Tuscumbia, Ala., Tsetsy Goode, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and 14 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local church or missions.
Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora is in charge of arrangements.
