Fred Terrell "Pete" HolmesFred Terrell “Pete” Holmes, age 93 of Winchester, passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Franklin Manor Assisted Living. He was born in Franklin County on November 26, 1927, to the late Woodie and Elna (Ford) Holmes. Pete graduated from Franklin County High School in Decherd. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Pete graduated from MTSU, where he played varsity football as quarterback, with a BS degree in 1949 and earned his MA degree in 1956. He coached and taught at Franklin County High School until 1967. He was the Attendance Supervisor at the central office for three years, served as principal of Cowan Elementary, started the athletic program at South Junior High, and ended his career in education as principal at South Junior High. He then started Shelter Insurance which he and his wife Elizabeth ran for twenty-four years. Pete was inducted into the Franklin County Football Hall of Fame on July 26, 2014. Over the years, his community service included serving on the Board of Governors at MTSU, organizing the first MTSU Alumni Club in Franklin County, membership in Cowan and Winchester Rotary Clubs, helping to organize and start Babe Ruth and Little League, coaching Little League, starting Franklin County Youth Council at Franklin County High School which receive state recognition, and serving as Past Commander of American Legion Post 44. Pete received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Jaycees and was listed in Personalities of the South in 1970. He was a dedicated member of Winchester Church of Christ. Pete enjoyed playing golf and rabbit hunting, but his true passion was helping children… and he did just that for so many. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Holmes; brothers, R.M., Bill, Charles, Jim Tom, Leon, and Joe; and sister, Edith Mullinax. He is survived by nieces and nephews, Mike Holmes, Joe Holmes, Dianne Tucker, Doris Prince, and Billie Jo Damron.
