Shirley Ann Houser, 87, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday. She was born January 8, 1934, in West Hazleton, PA to William and Mary Sauers, growing up with two brothers and two sisters.
She married Charles Houser after high school, and they lived in Philadelphia.
Later in life, she received a bachelor’s degree in social work from West Chester University, and a master’s in education from La Salle University. She spent her career working with abused women, crisis pregnancies, runaway teenage girls, and the mentally challenged. Shirley truly believed in a life of service.
In 1991, she moved to Huntsville to be near her daughter and worked as the Director of the Adult Alzheimer’s Day Care program at Trinity United Methodist until her retirement. In retirement, she spent many years volunteering as the coordinator for the Holy Spirit Perpetual Adoration Chapel Ministry.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, her only son, Timothy Houser, brother, James McGill, and brother-in-law, John McDonnell.
Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia Goshen (James), Lynne Hansell (Rick), and Kimberly Eppling (Evan); 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Donna McDonnell and Joanne Novotny (Steven); and brother, Jerry Sauers (Mary Ann).
Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. A Mass will follow at noon.
