Charles Maples Charles G. Maples Sr., age 100, passed from this life, after a brief decline, on the morning of May 11th, 2021, at the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann Veterans’ Home in Huntsville, Alabama.

He is survived by his sister Mogene Kelley of Coden, AL; his daughter Nancy (Mrs. David Dibbell) of S. New Berlin, NY; his son Chuck Maples of Sidney, NY; son-in-law Larry W. Bailey of Sidney, NY; his six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Etoile Williams, Mary Allen Lemley, Lorene Keel, Pauline Maples, and Mildred Maples (who died in infancy); by his brothers James Edward Maples (who also died in infancy), James Dennis (J.D.) Maples, Willy Frank Maples, and Cecil Haygood. He is also preceded by his beloved wife of sixty-six years Mattie Elizabeth Tabor Maples and his daughter, Sharon Bailey (Larry) of Sidney, NY.

Charles Maples was born on June 18th, 1920, in Huntsville, AL, to Samuel David Maples and Pearl Harless Maples. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II (1940-49) and studied at Freed Hardeman College in Tennessee as well as Florence State Teachers College before beginning his work as a preacher of the gospel among the churches of Christ in Alabama and Illinois, a work he continued faithfully for seventy years.

A brief outdoor memorial service for close friends and family is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 18th, at Moon Cemetery in Owens Cross Roads, AL, with his son-in-law David Dibbell officiating.

Flowers may be sent to the New Hope Funeral Home, and donations may be made to Hospice of North Alabama.

The Charles Maples family would like to express its heartfelt thanks to Margaret Nelson and all the home care providers at Always There of Huntsville, to Adam Heard, Mike Hovater and all the nurses and administrators of Hospice of North Alabama, to the outstanding staff of “Tut” Fann Veterans Home, to the late John Ikard, to Dad’s extended family, and to so many of our dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Your kindness, patience, compassion, and support surrounded our father in his last years and final days with love, light, and grace.
