James William Baker, age 85, of Gardendale, passed away June 2, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bufford and Rosie Baker. James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laquieta Smith Baker; son, Phillip Baker; siblings, Elizabeth Maples, Bobby Baker (Patsy), Wallace Baker (Sarah) and Deborah Baker as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members. James was a devoted husband and father. He and Mrs. Baker were lifetime church members. They attended Northland Cathedral in Kansas City, Metro Church of God in Birmingham and First Baptist Church of Gardendale. James loved his work. He was a real estate agent and an entrepreneur. James owned and operated a residential flooring company for many years after retiring from the real estate business. He served four years in the United States Air Force. Services will be held at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, June 7, 2021. Funeral service will begin at 2pm. The family will receive guests one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow services in New Horizon Memorial Gardens.
