Louis (Lou) Giles Horn III

Dr. Louis (Lou) Giles Horn III, 83, passed away on June 2, 2021. Dr. Horn was born in Anniston, AL to Louis Giles Horn, Jr. and Rosa White Horn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Joseph Faust Horn. He is survived by Joanne, his wife of 60 years; son, Louis Giles Horn IV, (Brittanie); five adored grandchildren, Gil Horn, Haley Carter (John), Joe Jr., Will, and Lizzie Horn; and his sister, Rebecca Maisel.

Dr. Horn graduated from the McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN. He received both his Bachelor of Science and Medical Degrees from Vanderbilt University, where he met his wife, Joanne. He served his internship and first year of residency in general surgery at Yale University. After then serving two years as a captain in the US Air Force in Chandler, AZ as a general surgeon, he completed his orthopedic residency at Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN and was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1972.

Lou and his family moved to Huntsville in 1970 where he established his orthopedic surgery practice that lasted 43 years until he retired in 2014. While in practice Dr. Horn belonged to and was active in numerous professional associations, including county, state, and national societies. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and served as a past president of the Division of Surgery and past Chief of Staff at Huntsville Hospital, Board of Directors and past president of the Alabama Orthopedic Society, and the Board of Directors of the Surgery Center.

Dr. Horn’s community involvement included serving on the Board of Trustees at Randolph School; Huntsville Rotary Club, past president; United Way, Professional Division Chairman. He was a long standing and active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served on the Session as both deacon and elder.

Lou was an avid outdoorsman and was happiest when he was hunting, fishing, or playing golf. His was a life well-lived – full of adventure and service to his family and community. His calm demeanor, positive outlook on life, and sense of humor were a constant source of strength to those around him. He will be missed by all who have shared his life.

Visitation will be held in Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., immediately followed by a memorial service in the Sanctuary. His ashes will be interred in the Memory Garden at the church.
