Jennie W. Cowan, former Director of Nursing at the local hospital in Winchester, Tennessee, died at home on April 7th, 2021 at the age of 81.
Jennie was born in Arrington, Virginia to Wayne and Margaret Tanner Wiley. She received her Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Tennessee – Memphis, and began her nursing career in the Pediatrics ward of Methodist Hospital. During her 33 year career, she mentored and supervised countless generations of nurses, leaving a lasting impact on the nursing field. She was respected by all, feared by some, but loved by most.
In her spare time, Jennie involved herself in local politics and community endeavors through the Franklin County Republican Party. She served as Chairman of the Franklin County Election Commission and was a charter member of the Southern Tennessee Ladies Society where she served in several different offices over the year. Finally, she was the author of the STLS Policies and Procedures Manual. Her favorite place in the world was Maui, Hawaii and she visited every chance that she had.
Jennie is survived by her children, Joy and Bruce Spencer, Linda and Robert Williams, and Ken and Allison Cowan; her grandchildren, Bruce Spencer, Jr., Blake Spencer, and Rose Cowan; her great grandchildren, Ellis Indiana Spencer, Wyatt Estes Spencer, Finnegan William Spencer, and Daisy Joy Spencer; her niece, Katie Hodge; and her nephew, Chris Hodge. She was preceded in death by her sister, Maggie Hodge, her husband, Kenneth D. Cowan, Sr., and her late husband, Jo C. Anderton.
Her Celebration of Life will be held on April 11th, 2021 at 2 pm at the Franklin Memorial Gardens and is hosted by Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Franklin County Animal Harbor and/or the Southern Tennessee Ladies Society.
