Sarah Lavon Hellebrand, 78, of Huntsville, passed away Friday. Lavon was born in Paint Rock, Alabama to Hilda and James McFarlen. She was known as “Lavon”, “Sister”, “Momma”, “Smile” and “Aunt Von”. However, her favorite two names to be called were “My Sweetie” by her high school sweetheart and husband of 55 years, and “Oma” by her three grandchildren.
Not only was Lavon a wonderful homemaker for her husband and two boys, she worked as a church administrator for 25 years. She was a seamstress for the Huntsville Community Ballet, a master gardener, incredible baker, world traveler, and a mean card player. Even with all her activities, she still found time to volunteer with the local soup kitchen and Meals on Wheels.
She considered her family her greatest blessing and loved them unconditionally. Lavon was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bernd. She is survived by her two sons, Duane (Allison) and Mike (Beth); three grandchildren, Gracie, Sam and Mollye; three brothers, Jasper (Kaye), Kenneth (Joan), and James C. (Shirley); and several nieces and nephews.
Whatever Lavon decided to do, she mastered it. She was a true lady who always put the needs of others over her own. She will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 31st at Ascension Lutheran Church in Huntsville. The memorial service will follow at the church with Pastor Bernard Ansorge officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of her favorite causes: Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, and Huntsville Community Ballet.
