ATHENS-The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reports a second person has died from injuries she received in a single-vehicle accident that occurred near Athens on February 2:

“A single-vehicle crash at approximately 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, in Limestone County has claimed the life of a second person.

Kimberly Michele Carter, 52, of Elkmont was fatally injured when the 2002 Chevy Silverado she was driving left the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned, ejecting her.  Carter, who was not using her seat belt, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Kirby Toney Watkins, 67, of Elkmont, who was a passenger in the Chevy, was injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Watkins succumbed Tuesday, February 9, to injuries she sustained during the crash.

Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor to the crash, which occurred on Sandlin Road near Fain Road, approximately nine miles north of Athens.  Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.”
