Jerry Shelton Ellis, 81, born on Christmas Day in 1939, died peacefully at his home in Huntsville on January 26, 2021. He was born and reared in Goldsboro, NC.
He graduated from the University of Alabama, where he played baseball and was named first-team All SEC second baseman his senior year. He was drafted by the Houston Colt 45s, but an injury in his first spring training ended his baseball aspirations.
After a 30-year career as a Contracts Manager in the aerospace industry in Huntsville, he opened, operated and enjoyed a small business, Can Do Unlimited.
He was an old-school gentleman with laconic dry wit, a wicked sense of humor, and a lifelong interest in sports – particularly Alabama football – and history.
His survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mickey Womble Ellis; son, Christopher Paley Ellis of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Brittain Ellis Prigge; son-in-law Scott Prigge; grandsons Ellis and Will Prigge, all of Atlanta.
He was a parishioner of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity for 54 years, and was interred there January 29, with limited attendance due to the Corona Virus restrictions.
Memorials may be made to the Friends of Music at Nativity, or the Huntsville Humane Society.
