Dr. Sarah Etheline Bounds, 78, of Huntsville, passed away Saturday. Dr. Bounds was born November 5, 1942, the only child of L.D. and Alice Boone Bounds. She attended Joe Bradley Elementary, Huntsville Junior High and Huntsville High. Her advanced education included Birmingham Southern College where she earned an AB degree in history and the University of Alabama where she earned a MA in 1965, and Ed.S in 1971, and a PhD in 1977.
Etheline taught at Rison Middle School, Davie Hill Middle School, Butler High School, Lee High School, Northeast Community College, University of North Alabama, and University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Etheline was a member and often an officer in many professional and community organizations including the Association of Alabama Historian, Alabama Historical Association, National Council of Historical Associations, National Council of Teachers of Social Studies, Alabama Education Association, and National Education Association. Her community organizations included Weeden House, Historical Huntsville Association, Twickenham Study Club, Huntsville Music Study Club, American Association of University Women, Burritt Museum, Friends of the Library, Aladdin Club, Huntsville-Madison County Historical Society and Pilot Club of Huntsville where she held many local and national offices.
In Alpha Delta Kappa, she was local president of Alabama Delta Chapter, Alabama State President, Alabama Kappan editor and many other local, state, and regional and international offices.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she served on the Finance Committee, Older Adult Ministries, and Historical Committee.
Etheline was an avid traveler within the United States as well as England, Egypt, China, Australia, and New Zealand.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Boone. She is survived by a host of friends.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 3 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow in the chapel with the Rev. Coy Hallmark and Dr. Bill Crosby officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
