Eli George Chatson passed away on May 10, 2020 in Madison, Alabama as a result of lung cancer at the age of 89. Eli was beloved by his family and his many friends. His soft-spoken and gentle manner drew people to him. Eli was viewed by many in his family as a problem-solver, and they reached out to him for advice and support. He was handy around the house and enjoyed tinkering and small repairs. He was easy-going and even-tempered in most circumstances. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a devout Catholic and enjoyed participating in various church men’s fellowship groups. Eli’s faith in God was strong and his Christian doctrines guided him throughout his life. He was fluent in French, Arabic, and English.
Eli was born in Port Said, Egypt and married his loving wife Rae in Beirut, Lebanon. Eli was a dedicated and loving father to his children, Eliane and George. After they were born, the family emigrated to the US. They settled in Williston Park, Long Island where he and Rae raised their family. Eli took a job in a label manufacturing company in Manhattan. It was the only job he ever had in the US as his hard work and easy manner led to him become a partner. He was a steady and dedicated provider for his family. After retirement, Eli and Rae lived in Sarasota, FL, Greenville, SC, and Madison, AL. They enjoyed many activities together, and with other couples, including tennis and bridge. After Rae passed away in 2010, Eli moved back to Sarasota to live at Bay Village. Eli enjoyed beach swimming and fishing. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Hospice, and the Down-Under store. In January 2020 he received the Unsung Hero Award at Bay Village for his many instances of providing help, care, and loving support to others. His selfless character led to him understand others well, and to look for ways to solve problems. He was a well-respected and loved patriarch of his extended family.
Eli was predeceased by his wife Rae and his sister Lola. He is survived by his sisters Eiva and Oda, his brother Reda, his daughter Eliane, and his son George. Eli is survived by numerous loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends.
An online memorial service is being planned and details will be forthcoming.
