Charles E. MathewsA graveside service for Mr. Charles E. Mathews, age 88 of Lineville, was held on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. at Lineville City Cemetery with Rev. Ben Curlee officiating.

Mr. Mathews passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020 at his home. Born in Clay County, he was a 1949 graduate of Lineville High School. He was a charter member of the Clay County Saddle Club, enjoyed raising and breeding quarter horses and farming. Mr. Mathews had many jobs throughout his life; he was the owner of Mathews Meat Market and was a contractor for Alabama Power for many years. A loving husband, father and grandfather; he took care of his family, no matter what it took. Mr. Mathews was a member of Lineville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Grace Mathews of Lineville; his daughter, Lisa Mathews Vinyard (Ronnie) of Rainbow City; two sons: Tim Mathews and Chris Mathews (Donna) both of Lineville; four grandchildren: Allison Therrien (Brian), Bethany Yopp (Brandon), Shannah Mathews and Patrick Frye (Amy); four great-grandchildren: John and Maeve Therrien and Jaxson and Jarrett Frye; two sisters: Gail McCord of Lineville; and Claudia Riley (Micky) of Jamestown, NC; several nieces, nephews and extended family members, Amy Newsome, Austin and Anne Hendrix.

He is preceded in death by his parents, E.B. Mathews and Claude Summerlin Mathews; and his brother, Gerald Mathews.

Honorary pallbearers were Anthony Mathews, Brandon Yopp, Derek Riley, Patrick Frye, Jack Hamby, Jerry McVey, Russell Johnson, Lloyd Sparks, Fred McLeod, Brian Therrien, Bud Jordan and Russell Anderson.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ben Street, Stephanie Smith and Angela Seymour for their love and care towards Mr. Mathews; and to the Clay County Rescue Squad for their help in transporting him on many occasions.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Lineville Baptist Church or the Clay County Rescue Squad.

Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville is in charge of the arrangements.
