Curtis Jerome Craig, Sr. Curtis Jerome Craig, Sr. passed from this life on December 31, 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lara and Nannie B. Craig and his brothers Dwight and James (Jim). Curt was born in New Hope, Alabama on May 26, 1942. At an early age his family moved to Owens Cross Roads, where he lived until his passing. He was a member of the first Town Council of Owens Cross Roads in the 1960s and later served five terms as Mayor from 1992 to 2012. For many years, he served as a Deacon at the Church of Christ at Owens Cross Roads. Curt and his wife, Betty, owned and operated a grocery store in downtown Owens Cross Roads for 25 years until their retirement in 2010. Earlier in his life, he ran a barbershop in downtown Owens Cross Roads.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Martin Craig; three children Betty Lynn (Rommie), Curtis, Jr. (Doreen), and Timothy Clay; brother Tony Keith (Elizabeth); twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and special friend and caregiver, Jennifer Evans.
Visitation will be on January 1, 2020 at New Hope Funeral Home from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on January 2, 2020 at Owens Cross Roads Church of Christ with Harold Kelly, Paddy Flanagan and Gary Bradley officiating. His body will lie in repose for one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Hampton Cove Memory Garden.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
