Rachel Inez Weeks passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019 at her home. She crossed over to join her mother, Pluma Shelton Weeks and father, James Oliver Weeks. She will be reunited with her sisters, Susie Weeks, Mary Jane Medlock, Freda Birchfield, Stanley Garner and Flossie Guthrie as well as her brothers Sam Billy Weeks, O. L. Weeks, Grady Weeks, Earles Weeks, Sherman Weeks, and Chub Weeks.

She turned 89 years old on Feb. 22, 2019. She spent her life in the service of others. She raised five generations of children beginning with her younger siblings and ending with her great-great nephews. She had to quit school in the fifth grade to care for her siblings while her parents and the older children picked cotton as share croppers in Marshall and Jackson Counties.

She spent the majority of her life baby-sitting for her family and others and later served as a companion and caregiver to the elderly. She influenced many lives and touched many hearts.

Her lack of education made education very important to her. She saw it as a way of “making something of yourself.” The truth is we all learned more from her fifth grade education and life experiences than any formal teaching.

She was a great woman who will be a great loss to many.

She is survived by two sisters, June Marsh of Scottsboro and Lois Batey of Scottsboro, as well as a multitude of very special nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and her great-great nephews, Trey Oliver of Scottsboro and Wil Hurt of Goshen, Alabama.

Although she had no children of her own, she was a mother to many. May her legacy of love, compassion, loyalty, discipline and genuine humanity live on through all of those she touched and who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 29, 2019, at 2 p.m., at Scottsboro Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pinehaven Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from 4-8 p.m., at the funeral home.
