Theresa Alice Miller, age 94, of Huntsville Alabama, died peacefully on Saturday, December 29, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. Theresa is survived by her two sons, David Miller and James Miller, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Meredith Miller, and her daughter, Beverly Hickman.
Theresa was born on November 28, 1924 in Franklin TN, the third of four siblings. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Chemistry. If asked, Theresa would tell you her favorite thing to do at Vanderbilt was study. But, don’t let that fool you. While a serious student, Theresa had a real joy for life; whether it was taking pleasure in the patch of violets she and her sister Dot passed walking home from school, watching Vandy beat Tennessee, or anything that involved ice cream.
It was at Vanderbilt where Theresa met her future husband Meredith, the love of her life. They were married in Nashville, TN on August 30, 1946. Theresa and Meredith subsequently moved to Madison, WI, Buffalo, NY, Richmond, VA and lastly to Huntsville, AL in 1963 where she made her home and raised her family for the next 55 years.
As part of the Huntsville community, Theresa and Meredith became active members of First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville. Theresa was a leader of the church, she was one of the first two female elders, supported the Presbyterian Mission program, was active in Women of the Church and served as their President and Bible moderator. In addition to her work with First Presbyterian Church, she served as President of the Cosmopolitan Club and served as a member of the Symphony Orchestra Guild.
Theresa and Meredith loved to travel and were fortunate to have many wonderful experiences in the U.S. and abroad during their life together. Two of their favorite places were New Orleans, LA and Destin, FL.
Theresa was an intelligent woman with a sharp wit and a keen sense of humor. In her work life she was a chemist for the Tennessee State Highway Department, a Realtor and co-owner of Towne Realty and Construction. She was a wife, mother, and loyal friend. Most importantly, she adored her family. She was a beloved grandmother from whom her grandchildren would seek advice and look to as a role model.
With a fierce determination to live life to its best, an indomitable optimism, as well as the quiet dignity with which she lived life, Theresa was an inspiration to all who knew her, especially her family.
Theresa is much loved and will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville AL, with the Reverend Dr. Tara Bulger officiating.
In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to commemorate the life of Theresa Miller may make a contribution to the Presbyterian Mission (https://www.presbyterianmission.org)
