F 11.13.18 Wayne Berry.jpgWayne Autry “Spud” Berry, 81, of Haleyville, lost his battle to pancreatic/liver cancer on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loved ones.

Mr. Berry was born on June 18, 1937, in Haleyville, Alabama. He was a graduate of Haleyville High School. Wayne served in the Alabama Army National Guard for 11 years. He was known as “Spud” by family and friends. Wayne was a fireman at Haleyville Fire Department for 53 years, a member of the American Legion, a Master Mason of Haleyville Masonic Lodge No. 464, as well as a member of Eastern Star No. 224. He was a Deacon of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Wayne worked for 30 years as a conductor for the railroad. He enjoyed Alabama football and NASCAR racing. His family would like to extend their thanks to all the family and friends for the many prayers, calls and visits. Also, a special thank you to Michelle, Diane, Grace, and everyone at Keller Hospice for their care.

Visitation will be held tonight from 6 to 8 at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville, where services will be held Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at 11 a.m. Brother Bobby Poss and Bryan Ward will officiate. Burial will follow in Winston Memorial Cemetery.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sonja Southern Berry; son, Bruce Berry and his wife Ede; daughters, Nancy Berry, Amanda Berry and furbaby, Lily. He was “Papaw” to grandogs, Snoopy, Lucy, and Gracie Belle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Hattie Taylor Berry; brothers, Guy and Jimmy Berry; and sister, Geneva Berry.
