Richard Lewis (RL) Childress, 92 of Bagley Community, passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home on September 8, 2018.
Mr. Childress was a devoted husband, father and believer. He served in the Army during WWII where he was a surviving P.O.W earning the Purple Heart. He retired from US Steel and was known for his outgoing personality. He was passionate about sports including football, basketball and baseball where he faithfully supported those of his family who played the game. R.L. loved his Lord, country, church, family and friends deeply. He is preceded in death by his father, Oscar Eugene Childress, mother, Mae Lindsey Childress, and Dorothy Lee Hawkins Childress (wife). He is survived by Richard Dwight Childress (Judy), Michael Dwain Childress (Linda) and Nita C. Allums (Mike), nine grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held at New Horizon Funeral Home in Dora, Alabama on September 11th. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Corner. Pastors Devin Dean and Mike Allums will officiate and Kim Allums James will deliver the eulogy.
In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
