A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Betty Jean Shackelford Pointer will be held Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at noon at David Temple Word of Faith Church in Hillsboro with Bishop Curtis Foster officiating and inhumation in Calvary Memorial Garden. Public viewing will be Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m. and Monday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Home.
She was born on November 28, 1937 to the late June and Luella Garth Shackelford in Lawrence County. She departed this life early morning on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Decatur Morgan Hospital-Decatur General Campus.
Betty accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She was a member of David Temple P.B. Word of Faith Church until her declining health. She served faithfully in the following: Choir, Usher Board and Kitchen Committee. Mother Betty loved to cook and serve. She will lovingly be remembered for her signature caramel cakes. She was steadfast and unmoveable in her faith and always thankful, but, relentless saying “I can Pay my way.” Betty was employed as a domestic worker for private homes.
Survivors include her son, Clarence Jr. (Michelle) Pointer of Rosamond, California; daughters, Barbara Jean Sykes (Gerry) of Decatur and Gloria Denise Pointer of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Enrique, Elijah, Gerry Jr. and Ashley; great-grandson, Javin; brothers, Elder Eddie Shackelford of Hillsboro, Aldoff Shackelford, Collis Shackelford (Lucy) and Levert Shackelford (Sharon), all of Decatur, John Earl Smith and Darnell Smith of Memphis, Tennessee; sisters, Christine Shackelford Jackson (Theron) of Columbia, Maryland, Lynda Smith McKinney, Bobby Jean Smith Hicks and Denise Smith McKinney, all of Memphis, Tennessee; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
