Catherine Manning Roper, age 91, passed away on August 10, 2018. Catherine was the daughter of the late Thomas and Willie B. Manning. She graduated from the University of Montevallo and taught school for 38 years, with most of her years at Butler High School. After retiring as an educator, she worked at Sterling Travel Agency until age 85.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph “Jiggs” Roper. Catherine is survived by her daughter, Beth Roper Carter (Ronald); her son, Randy Roper (Ken Rivenbark); two grandchildren, Allison Carter (Sarah Brazzel) and William Carter; and Mary Louise Manning. Special thanks are expressed to her caregivers: Lisa Green, Tammy Hatfield, Lauren Wiggins, and Hospice of North Alabama.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, August 12 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 13 at Maple Hill Cemetery with Dr. Charles Gattis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hunter Stephenson Felines and Canines Rescue Center, 266 Hamer Road, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763; St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or a charity of your choice.
