Dr. Henry W. Schiessl, 93, retired industrial research chemist, chemical engineer and former adjunct Professor of Chemistry at the University of New Haven Conn., died Saturday in Huntsville.
Born in Ingolstadt, Germany, he immigrated at an early age to the United States and eventually became a naturalized citizen. He earned a B. Ch. E. from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and subsequently obtained a D. Sc. in Chemistry, magna cum laude, from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
In WWII, he served in the U. S. Army, in the ETO, from the landing in Normandy until the end of the war.
Dr. Schiessl spent his industrial career working for the Olin Corp. He received many patents in the chemistry field; among his publications are Hydrazine chapters in two editions of the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology (John Wiley). He was a 50-year member (emeritus) of the American Chemical Society.
He is survived by a nephew, Nelson McGahee; a niece, Katherine McGahee; two grandnephews, William and Christopher Perkins and great grandnieces and nephews.
