James Russell Daly – Obituary

James Russell Daly, 94, of Decatur, died Thursday, March 22, 2018 at his residence. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Greenbrier Baptist Church. He will lie-in-state from 1-2 p.m. Ricky Lowery is officiating. Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery.Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. March 24th at Spry Funeral Home in Athens.

Mr. Daly was born Sept. 2, 1923 in Limestone County.He was a faithful member of Greenbrier Baptist Church, a deacon for 50 years, and taught Sunday School for 68 years. He lived a Christian life, witnessed to everyone he met and he was a family patriarch. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a graduate of Tanner High School, Athens College, and attended the University of Alabama. He was employed at Redstone Arsenal, Belle Mina Cotton Gin, and he was retired from Fruehauf. He loved a meat and three. A longtime Little League Baseball Coach, and he loved fishing, hunting, and all outdoors.

Survivors include wife of 69 years, Mae Daly, of Decatur; son, James Larry Daly and wife Judy, of Decatur; grandson, Tony Meinert, of Columbus, Mississippi; 14 nephews, and 8 nieces and his companion and friend, his dog Harley.

He was preceded in death by parents, Russell and Tippie Daly; brothers, Lawrence, Maxie, and Robbie Daly.

Pallbearers will be Richard Norman, Tony Williams, Wayne Williams, Tim Lucier, Ray McConnell, Tommy Daly. Honorary pallbearers are J. C. Moyers, Ben Guice, Don Thompson, and Butch Anderson.
