Denise B. Johnson, 50, of Madison, passed away Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. Denise was born in Birmingham and graduated from Cathedral of the Cross High School in 1986. She went on to Auburn University, where she received both her Bachelors (1990) and Masters (1991) degrees in English Education. For more than 20 years, she taught Language Arts to 8th graders at Meridianville Middle School and touched the lives of thousands of students.
Denise loved vacationing at the beach with friends and family and enjoying seafood while there. Denise was a musician who studied piano for many years, sang in the church choir, and played in the handbell choir. The most important thing in her life, however, was her faith in God and her trust in Him to guide and protect her.
Survivors include her husband of 24 years, Lyle Johnson; her parents, James and Mary Bannister of Sterrett, AL; Lyle’s parents, Lavaughn and Peggy Johnson; her brother, Alan Bannister (Robin) of Harrison, NY; her uncles, George Bannister (Kathleen), Robert Williams, Bill Williams, and Edward Williams (Betty); her aunt, Nedra Bannister; her nieces, Julien, Sophia, and Lailah Bannister, Lucy Johnson, and Tiller Johnson; her nephew, Rollie Johnson; and many cousins. She is preceded in death by her uncles, Dan Williams (Nell), Edwin Bannister, and Paul Johnson; and her aunt, Faye Williams.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Dr. Alan Weatherly officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Huntsville Memory Gardens.
