James ‘Jimmy’ Ryan Martin, 93, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Mr. Martin was born in Rising Fawn, GA; graduated from Gadsden High School; and served 3 years in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Success. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1949 from the University of Alabama. He married Hazel Ruth French on April 4, 1954 and they were married for 57 years. In 1960 he began working at Redstone Arsenal for MICOM in the Environmental Test Branch retiring in 1988. Jimmy was the chairman of University United Methodist Church Finance Committee for over 30 years and a member of American Legion Post 237. He enjoyed Alabama football, the Atlanta Braves, playing and spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, playing bridge and reading western novels.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Ruth Martin. He is survived by his daughter, Kristi Fugit and husband, Daniel Fugit; son, Craig Martin and wife, Janice Martin; grandchildren, Kyle Fugit (Ann Fugit), Jessica Calvert (Ben Calvert), Kati Fugit, Jennifer Calvert (Joe Calvert) and Jamie Holder (Dylan Holder); and great-grandchildren, Parker, Hannah and Shelby Calvert.
A graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 30th, at Valhalla Memory Gardens with Rev. Wilson Shirley officiating.
