Funeral service for Jerry Gilman “Jug” Netherton, age 76, of Decatur (formerly of Addison), will be Saturday, October 7, 2017, 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Nesmith, AL with Bro. Steton Hayes, Ronnie Privett, and Ethan Netherton officiating and Nichols Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 6, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home in Decatur, and on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at the church. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Netherton, who died Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at UAB Hospital, was born September 26, 1941, in Addison to Haywood and Onie Netherton. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Hubert Netherton, Wilborn Netherton, Carist Netherton, Will Netherton, Odell Netherton, and Milford Wilson; and five sisters, Jewel Smothers, Lena Netherton, Gladys Harper, Velma Eaton, and Obera Stewart.
Jerry was known as “Jug” to family and friends. He graduated from Addison High School in 1959, where he earned 1st Team All State Football. In 1999, he was inducted into the Winston County Sports Hall of Fame. Jerry opened Netherton Auto Parts in 1974, where he loved to go to work. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He earned Ford Motorcraft Signature Club Gold Award and North Alabama Shriners Club Award for several years. Jerry loved the stock market and Alabama football.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria Ann Netherton; two sons, Bruce Netherton (Michelle), and Stevie Netherton (Alisha); one daughter, Jerri Ann Netherton Reynolds (Mike); one brother, Tillman Netherton (Joyce); two sisters, Vivian Bradford (Harold) and Connie Ponder (Terry); he was “Paw Paw” to seven grandchildren, Ethan Netherton, Hunter Netherton, Brady Netherton, Haley Reynolds, Gracie Netherton, Cole Reynolds, and Drei Netherton; and one great-grandchild, Baylor Netherton.
