Annie Willie Smith Sneed, 86, formerly of Florence, Alabama, died on May 30, 2017, in her home in Calumet City, Illinois. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 10, at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 7848 S. Normal St., Chicago, Illinois 60620.
She was the daughter of the late Cornelius “Conch” and Edna Smith, a former member of Bethel M.B. Church, and graduate of Burrell High School, class of 1948. For 68 years she was married to Samuel Sneed, her high school sweetheart. Her Florence roots and connections were extremely important to her, and she maintained communications all over the world with countless friends and family from her hometown. She attended reunions and special occasions in Alabama as well as sponsored events involving hometown persons in Illinois.
She was a very active member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Chicago, the defunct Florence, Alabama club, and the Sophisticated Ladies social club. For three decades she was employed by the Cook County sheriff’s department from which she retired. Her civic activities involved: president of the Block Club in Calumet City, member of the Senior Citizens Council, and political advisor to area politicians.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Sam; her son, Randy; her parents; and many relatives and friends with whom she grew up on the west side.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Odell) Davis; her son, Tony; six grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-grandchildren; in-laws, Robert and Laura Sneed, Crispus Sneed, Mary Sneed Horne, and Sharon Sneed; first cousins, W.L. Smith, Anita Smith Cobb, Mattie Smith Carter, Edna Pearl Stewart, and Sevoyia Beavers; and a host of relatives and friends throughout the United States.
