Phil Stanley “Coach” Holladay – Obituary

Phil Stanley “Coach” Holladay, 70, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday. Phil was born March 21, 1947 and grew up in Danville. He graduated from Danville High School in 1965 and he earned a Bachelor Degree in Education from Athens State University.

He spent his career as a coach and teacher at Grissom High School. Phil was the first boys soccer coach and instrumental in developing the soccer field. Coach Holladay was selected soccer coach of the year four times with Huntsville City Schools.

He coached varsity girls basketball 1985 – 1995. He was voted Huntsville City Schools girls basketball coach of the year six times. Coach Holladay was voted AL Sports Writers 6-A coach of the year 1991- 1992.

Coach Holladay is survived by his wife of 49 years Barbara House Holladay; daughter Christy Holladay Bishop (Randy); son Tim Holladay (Brandey); siblings Wade Holladay, Cliff Holladay, Jerry Holladay (Archie), Lynn Holladay, Mary Gem Johnson; sister-inlaw Carolyn House Rountree (Jim) and Joe Ockerman; and loving nieces and nephews. Papa enjoyed spending time on the farm with his grandchildren Jacob (Sarah), Abi, Bristol, R.J., and greatgranddaughter Laynee.

He was preceded in death by his parents Isaac Emmett and Evie Crow Holladay and sister Dewese Ockerman.

He touched the lives of others and made a difference in the world. He was always friendly and helpful. Students, friends and family will think of him and smile.

Visitation for Coach Holladay is Friday, May 12th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at Berryhill Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. with Brother Dan Compton and Brother Mike Hulsey officiating. Graveside service will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Friendship Cemetery in Danville.
