James L. Newman, 88, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Decatur General Hospital. He was a military man, loved his country, loved to fly, loved his family, and was faithful to God. He was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, nephew, cousin and friend. He had special relationships in each of his roles in life. Especially with his country and God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Elinor K. Newman, as well as his grandparents, J.M. and Hattie Kicker.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy G. Newman; his children, Scott Newman (Susan), Lesley Newman Long and Russell Long (Jeanne); his sister, Jane Newman Malone; his grandson, Thomas Newman; and Mr. Newman’s stepchildren, Louise Copeland, Mike Meadows, David Meadows, Debbie Fairbanks, M’Lee Zaldivar and Cathy Jones. He also had 13 stepgrandchildren, ten step great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are as follows, Scott Newman, Russell Long, Thomas Newman, Ralph Long, Zac Fairbanks and Matt Meadows.
Visitation and funeral will be held at First Bible Church, Decatur, on Friday, April 28, 2017. Visitation will be from noon to 1:45 p.m. and the funeral will begin at 2 p.m. The graveside service will follow and will take place at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please donate to Meals on Wheels, Hospice of the Valley or the Community Free Clinic.
