Martha Louise Bulls Smith was born May 3, 1928 in Center Star, Alabama to the late Will George Bulls and Sarah Littleton. She was affectionately known as “Sal” and “Pocahontas” by her loving family.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful servant of Lone Star Presbyterian Church in Killen, Alabama. She later became a member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Sheffield, Alabama.
She was a loving wife to her late husband, William L. Smith for 60 years and was a loving mother of 14 children and their extended families. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and reading. Traveling and visiting family was a joy she experienced for many years. Her encouraging words, strength, and wisdom will always be a part of the legacy she leaves.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Smith; daughters, Paulette Edwards, Shirley Burton, and Diane Marsh Hollingsworth; son-in-laws, Harvey Glenn, Vonell Burton, and Londell Edwards.
She leaves to cherish her memories children, Mary (James) Garrison, Jacqueline Glenn, Irene (Rufus) Slack Jr., Bernice Smith, William (Christine) Smith Jr., Marilyn Smith, Edwin (Debra) Smith, Ronald (Rhonda) Smith, Andrea (Harry) Shelton, Daryl (Cheyvonne) Smith, and Regina Doss; sister, Ment Johnson; and brother-in-law, Maple Smith.
She leaves many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who she cared for deeply.
Visitation with the family will be Friday, 7-8 p.m. at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Florence with public viewing 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017 at First Missionary Baptist Church, Sheffield, Alabama with Reverend Rufus Slack, officiating and Reverend Jeffrey Braxton, Pastor. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery, Elgin, Alabama. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
