ATHENS-Awards are flowing into the City of Athens Wastewater Treatment Facility.
The facility most recently received the 2017 Alabama Water Environment Association Award of Excellence for plants in the 1 to 10 million gallons per day category.
The facility previously placed second in the association’s competition in 2016 and 2015. In addition, the facility won the Best Operated Plant Award in its category from the Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
To compete, the city allows an inspection team to see the operation and review facility records and manuals.
Facility Superintendent Virgil White said the Athens plant can treat up to 9 million gallons per day. The average flow is 4.5 million gallons a day.
“The work of all employees of Athens Utilities helped our facility to perform well in these competitions, and their hard work is very much appreciated,” White said.
On Monday, April 24, during the Athens City Council meeting, Mayor Ronnie Marks and Water/Wastewater Manager Frank Eskridge recognized the treatment facility staff for their work.
“We want our staff to know how much we appreciate them, and we also want the public to know that we are operating a treatment plant that has been recognized for excellence,” Eskridge said.
