June 9-11 will also be recognized as Olympic Day events, by the United States Olympic Committee. The weekend kicks-off with a huge Opening Ceremony celebration on Friday, June 9, held at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds in Dothan, AL. A special presentation of the ASF Foundation’s Honoring our Heroes program will take place during the Opening Ceremony. The Alabama State Games offers over 20 sports for youth and adults of all ages and skill levels, including adapted sports for those with disabilities (Bowling, Miracle League Baseball, Track and Field, Taekwondo, and more). New sports for 2017 include fast and slow pitch softball, through a partnership with USA Softball of Alabama, and a karate tournament, through a partnership with the World Yoshukai Karate Kubudo Organization, located in Dothan, AL. Qualify for State Games of America: Medal winners (gold, silver, bronze) at the Alabama State Games XXXV, and from the 2016 Alabama State Games qualify to represent Alabama in the State Games of America (SGA) multi-sport competition, which will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, August 3-6,

The SGA is an Olympic-style event featuring competition between medal winners from State Games programs across the nation. The event is hosted every two years on the odd year (i.e. 2015, 2017, etc.). A list of qualifying sports for the State Games of America are posted on the www.alagames.com website, under each individual sport page. SGA was created by The National Congress of State Games (NCSG). NCSG is a membership organization composed of 30 Summer State Games and 10 Winter State Games organizations and is a member of the United States Olympic Committee’s Multi Sport Organizational Council. Athlete of the Year Award: Outstanding athletes participating in individual and team sports during the Games are eligible to be nominated for Alabama State Games Athlete of the Year, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors. A youth and adult category for male and female recipients are available for registered athletes. Along with being recognized by the Governor of Alabama for their achievements and receiving a medal, Athletes of the Year will have the honor to walk in the Parade of Athletes and anchor the Olympic torch relay during the Alabama State Games XXXV Opening Ceremony on Friday, June 9, 2017 at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds in Dothan, AL.
