Dorothy Ann Lovett, age 66, formerly of Fort Wayne, Indiana, currently of Athens, AL, died Thursday, February 2, 2017 in Huntsville, AL. She was the daughter of the late Alberta Gardner Fletcher and James Marvin Bush, Jr.

Dorothy was a former administrator and teacher, retiring after thirty-eight years in the field of education. She graduated from Elkton High School in 1969, Columbia State Community College, A.S., 1971, Tennessee Technological University, 1973 and M.A., 1974. She continued her love for education by attending and receiving certification in administration and special education from the following colleges: Indianan University, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, Ball State University, Indiana Wesylana, Lamar University and Bowling Green State University. She was an awesome teacher/administrator who loved “her kids”. She was a person who championed for the “under dogs” the ones society would say would most likely not make it in the world. However, she believed in them and did all possible to make sure they made it if at all possible. She fought for her kids because she knew how it felt to be looked upon as one who “did not come from the right side of town.” Some of the kids at school affectionately called her Mom or Mama.

Dorothy not only worked with young people, but she also was a Crisis Intervention Counselor at Park Center for fifteen years. She worked for Scan and was a foster parent for teenagers for a number of years, all the time raising her own children and helping other children that no one really knew she was housing. One day she was asked, “What if the system found out you was keeping that kid at your house until her mother was released from jail what would you do? She thought about it and said she would not lie but simply say, “Well, I had a couple of choices: let her freeze in a house without heat, lights or food or just bring her to my house with her baby? I made the choice, I’ll live with the consequences.”

Dorothy was a wonderful singer sometimes called Beverly Crawford, Dottie Peoples, Aretha Franklin or Sister Lovett, but it did not matter the name because when she sang, she sung under the anointing.

Dorothy was an awesome mother and grandmother. She loved her children and grandchildren. She always talked about their achievements and future plans, always encouraging to do better in life. She wanted them to strive for a better life than she had, often telling them how you can do anything you want to do as long as you do your best and trust in God.

Many memories are left with her two sons, George Lovett and Prelvis Jones; daughter, Shalana Lovett; five Grandchildren, Mecca Lovett, Temple-Ann Lovett, Aniyah Bailey, Zyllah Lovett and A’Donis Bone; two brothers, Willie Fletcher and Thomas Fletcher; two sisters, Barbara Matthews and Brenda Fletcher; several nieces and nephews.
