Mrs. Lucille Layton Coffey of Decatur passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Westminster Assisted Living, surrounded by family and friends, she was 91 years old. Service will be at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, January 18th, at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Steve Caudle and Pastor Richie Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service (11:00 am to 1:00 pm). Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with nephews and Larry Johnson serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Coffey was born November 23, 1925 in Lawrence County to William R. Morgan and Earl Gray Morgan. She graduated from National Secretarial School-Nashville, TN in 1945 and retired from Freuhauf Corporation where she worked as a secretary for many years. She was a devoted, loving mother and grandmother. Her family and church family were the center of her life. She was a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church for over 40 years.
She married Loyd L. Layton in 1947 and they were married for over 30 years-they had two children, Danny L. Layton and Janet L. Johnson. Later in life, Mrs. Coffey married Cecil M. Coffey and they shared 18 years of marriage and enjoyed time with his children. Husbands preceded her in death as did her son, Danny: two brothers, Arnold Morgan and Ernest Morgan and two sisters, Annie Mae Morgan Gibson and Wille Mae Morgan Sivley.
Suvivors include one daughter, Janet L. Johnson (Jerry) of Decatur: granddaugher, Holli Hargrove of San Luis Opisibo, CA and Michelle Johnson of Huntsville; daughter-in-law, Diane Layton of Decatur; grandsons Danny Layton II, Fairview, NC; John Layton of Decatur and Jeremy Johnson, Peachtree City, GA; one borther, Floyd Morgan (Betty); two sister, Shirley Hargrove (Ray) and Eula Johnson (Ralph). Three sisters-in-laws, Mary Scruggs, Sarah Hudson (Frank), and Martha Layton all of Decatur.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Baptist Church or Westminster Assisted Living, Decatur.
The family wishes to extend a very heartfelt THANK YOU to the staff and caregivers at Westmister Assisted Living for the love and care provided. Mother loved them and they are truly angels.
