Monroe Staggs – Obituary

Mr. Monroe Staggs, age 91, entered into rest peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Mr. Staggs was born on February 26, 1925, in Lawrence County, Tennessee. Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy during WWII, he returned to Lawrenceburg where he joined his beloved wife, Agnes Staggs, and infant daughter. There, he continued working on the family farm and began a career at Murray Ohio Mfg. Co. where he retired after 30 years. After retiring, he owned and operated two different tire shops where he gained the nickname “Pop.” Mr. Staggs also served as: a former Elder of Salem Church of Christ; civil servant; Magistrate; and Lawrence County School Board Chairman. Most importantly, he has influenced many lives through his faithfulness to his family, to God, and the Church.

Mr. Staggs is survived by: His children, Glendora S. Leigh (husband, Jim), Sharon J. Eady (husband, Buddy), both of Lawrenceburg, TN; Bruce Staggs (wife, Rosemary) of Franklin, TN; Larry Staggs of Johnson City, TN; and Lisa S. Haynes (husband, Jeff) of Clyde, NC. His sister, Eloise S. Hulen (husband, Wayne) of Bartlett, TN. His eight grandchildren: Christi L. Smith, Amy K. Stubbs, Thomas A. Staggs, Anna M. Sutton, Ryan J. Staggs, Margaret Jane Strelecki, Lauren A. Walker, and Logan S. Ledford; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Staggs is preceded in death by: His wife of 62 years, Agnes Staggs; His parents: Lucy Patterson Staggs and Jesse Wilson Staggs; one granddaughter, Lindsay N. Ledford; four sisters: Virgie Staggs, Mrs. Evalene DiGeorgio, Mrs. Cindy McCluskey, and Viola Jackson Long; four brothers, Harlan Staggs, Reavis Staggs, Wilburn Staggs (infant), and Ellis Staggs.

Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Neal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 13, 2016, with Bill Brazier officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Lawrence County, TN with full military honors. Family suggests memorials be made to Pleasant Grove Cemetery Fund.
