William Pelham Blackburn, age 64, of Farmville, Virginia, passed away on Nov. 7, 2016 unexpectedly at home; leaving behind a wife, Jennifer; a daughter, Lorna (Jason); granddaughters, Eliza and Cadi; a sister, Becky (Lee) Weathers; a brother, Edward (Stephanie); other family members, Oliver and Evelyn Oswalt, Scarlett, Tommy, Anthony, Bo, Nancy and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Joe H. Blackburn Sr. and Ann Turner Blackburn; and a brother Joe H. Blackburn Jr.

Following his service in the Air Force and graduation from the University of Alabama, he joined PPG Industries working in various locations. During his 31 years with the company, including 13 years at Transitions Optical, his work resulted in several awards and numerous patents in coatings technology. He and Jennifer retired to Virginia near their daughter’s family, and recently he found enjoyment working on site with Habitat for Humanity.

Mr. Blackburn was a man of determination who never backed away from a challenge, had a wry sense of humor, an intense love of family, and a willingness to help out. He enjoyed diverse hobbies, loved travel and history, and loved to take on new projects and experiences. He enjoyed the opportunity to work with diverse people both in work and in private life.

Memorial contributions may be made to Farmville Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 816, Farmville, VA 23901 or a charity of your choice. A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Spring Run Presbyterian Church, 6601 Woodlake Village Parkway, Midlothian, Virginia 23112.
