nancyNancy Elaine (Myers) Grigsby, age 58, traveled to her new home in heaven on Thursday, Nov. 10th. She was surrounded by her family as she shed her cancer ridden body and exchanged it for a perfect one.

She was born in Florence, Alabama on June 25, 1958. She graduated from Sheffield High School, where she was Miss Sheffield High, and Mississippi College, where she was homecoming queen and Miss MC. She accomplished many other awards too numerous to mention. She married her husband, Bill, in 1985.

She moved to Niceville, Florida in 1985 and immediately immersed herself in the community.

Nancy worked as a medical social worker and patient educator at Fresenius Medical Care. Her patients and co-workers were part of her extended family.

Two of her passions were First Baptist Church of Niceville and The Florida Baptist Children’s Homes. She was part of the fabric of First Baptist Church Niceville and taught various classes and Bible studies the entire 31 years she attended. She served on the Board of Florida Baptist Children’s Homes for over 20 years; she led numerous mission trips to Guatemala after she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer to work in a children’s malnutrition center.

Some would say that she lost her battle with cancer. The truth is cancer never had a chance with her. She lived close to 14 years after her diagnosis and accomplished more in that time than most people do in a lifetime. She lived her life according to Proverbs 31.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Bill Grigsby Sr., and brother-in-law, Greg.

She is survived by her parents, Doug and Ginny Myers, of Sheffield, Alabama; her husband of 31 years, Bill Grigsby, of Niceville, Florida; her sons, Taylor and Parker (fiancée, Erica); brother, Doug; sister, Sandy; mother-in-law, Sally Grigsby; sister-in-law, Marie Burns (Bill); also numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of life for Nancy Thursday, Nov. 17, at First Baptist Church of Niceville located at 622 Bayshore Dr., Niceville, beginning at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow.

Nancy loved the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes. If you would like to donate in her name, it would be an investment in the lives of many children. You can go to fbchomes.org or you can mail a donation in Nancy’s name to: Florida Baptist Children’s Homes P.O. Box 8190, Lakeland, FL 33802.

We would like to thank the doctors and staff of Emerald Coast Cancer Center, Ming C. Chang, M.D, Harvey Hsiang, M.D., Henry Hsiang, M.D, and Jaime Braden RN, MSN, ARNP-C. We can never thank them enough for the care and support they provided Nancy. They are truly world class.

We would also like to thank Beau Kelly, M.D., who performed several surgeries at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Also, Sushil Asthana, M.D., who performed several surgeries at Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center.

Finally, Dr. Chris Chaney and the amazing nurses and techs at Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center ICU. They worked tirelessly to give us a few, precious extra days with Nancy.
