Joseph “Joe” Wendall Monroe, 87, of Huntsville, passed away at 12:30 a.m. November 8, 2016 at his home on Monte Sano. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in downtown Huntsville with Reverend Coy Hallmark officiating.
Joe was born on August 4, 1929 to Raymond and Gertrude Monroe in Huntsville, AL. He served in the ROTC and graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning to Huntsville from the Army, he was employed by the Thiokol Corporation at Redstone Arsenal, working with solid rocket motors. Joe worked with Boeing during the Saturn V program, and in later years employed his many talents in architecture, real estate, and engineering consulting. He finished his professional career with United Space Boosters, Inc. in the early 1990s. More importantly, and above any of these achievements, Joe was a beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a faithful friend to many.
Joe is survived by his ex-wife, Patty Monroe; daughter, Susan Haskell; sons, Michael and Raymond Monroe; grandchildren, Chris, Paul and Joseph Haskell, Holly Hannah, Heidi and John Monroe; and great-granddaughter, CheyAnne Huddleston.
