ZIP CITY – So, last year when the Zip City Volunteer Fire Department threw a chili cook-off, this writer over-indulged so badly that he had to take a nap before driving home. Well, not really… But almost. It was close…
So this year, all of the staff at The Quad-Cities Daily has pledged not to over-eat. We will see. The cook-off is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th.
Robert Walker owner of P&K Western Wear in Zip city and in Florence is one of the event organizers. He sent us some information on a special group that will be appearing, “XXXtremes.”

“Nine years ago a ministry was born at First Baptist Church Center Star. Three ladies were asked to present a skit to “Chase away the winter blues”. Jackie Beavers, Lisa Vest and Deena White were known by the others members as having quick wit mixed in with a little humorous sarcasm. The ladies quickly came up with the idea of a takeoff of the 60’s Diva Group Diana Ross and the Supremes. One thing led to another, and soon their name changed to The XXXtremes, and they were being asked to perform their show at local churches, schools and community functions. Little did they know God had brought the three of them together for a reason. In March 2007, He knew what each of them would face in the future and formed a bond that would bring laughter through the storms. Collectively these ladies have endured… the struggles of a divorce, financial hardships, family members with cancer and Multiple Sclerosis, death of a parent, loved ones who suffered from addictions and the list could go on and on. But through all these life struggles they have held on to their faith and claimed Proverbs 17:22 (A cheerful heart is good medicine but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength) as their signature verse or as they like to say ~ “Laughter is good for the soul”! The focus of their ministry is to help people forget their troubles if only for one hour.
The XXXtremes take popular songs from all decades and rewrite them to become parodies dealing with everyday life. Husbands, Kids, Teenagers, Food, Weight Loss, Weight Gain, Weight Loss again (or as they call it the “Diet Rollercoaster”) are some of the fan favorites. The ladies say, even though they enjoy being on stage, their favorite part is their late night slumber party / song writing sessions. One song that comes to mind was written at 2:00am while all three were listening to their husbands snore, they began texting each other and by 4:00am the song “Snoring Man” was born.”
