DECATUR-Monday, August 1 Morgan County 911 received a call regarding a bank robbery at t Bank Independent located at 2606 US Hwy 31 South. The Decatur Police Department released a statement regarding the robbery and arrest of a suspect:
“On August 1, 2016 at 3:39 PM, Morgan County E911 received the call of a Robbery at Bank Independent located at 2606 US Hwy 31 South.
Multiple units from the Decatur Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to the scene along with members of the Decatur Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
Officers were able to obtain a description of the suspect that they relayed to other Officers. Officer Derek Annerton located a subject at Hardee’s on Hwy 31 South who matched the suspect’s description. The subject was identified as Melvin Lloyd Fails and was detained for further investigation.
Officer Wesley Swoopes of the Decatur Police Departments K9 unit responded to the scene and conducted a track with his K9. The K9 tracked from the bank straight to Officer Annerton and Melvin Lloyd Fails. Further into the investigation video surveillance clearly identified Fails as the offender.
Det. Matt Young of the Decatur Police Departments Violent Crimes Unit arrived at Officer Annerton’s location and had Fails transported to the Decatur Police Department.
During the course of the investigation it was concluded that Fails was also the suspect in another Bank Robbery at the Bank Independent location at 1425 Beltline Rd. SW that occurred on July 5th, 2016. Video evidence releveled that Fails was responsible for that Robbery as well.
Fails was charged with two counts of Robbery in the 1st Degree and processed through the Decatur City Jail. Fails will be transferred to the Morgan County Jail when his bond is set.
